Subject: RE: study plans

Hello Robert,

I achieved PMP on July 27, 2004.  My plan said that I would take the PMP exam up to three times.  I achieved PMP on the second exam. I knew that I was just at the pass/fail mark before the first exam but I did not have sufficient time to change the test date.  I took it after the 4th of July weekend.  The second test was harder than the first.

My study guide or plan varied and was not well documented.  It was more of an adaptive plan since my current engagement required extended irregular hours.

If I was starting in the next class I would do the following differently.

  1. Read and study the PMBOK® Chapters several times to a depth of understanding not just familiarization. (I belong to three PMI chapters and one chapter requires the PMP prep class attendees to have read the entire PMBOK® before attending the first class.)
  2. Read and study the assigned chapters and do the exercises at the end.
  3. Class should be a review and discovery of what was not understood during homework.1

Items that worked well for me were;

  1. Sent in the application on-line after the attending classes and achieving 35 contact hours.  Received approval to sit for the exam in 24 hours.
  2. Schedule as soon after the class is finished and you feel comfortable that you will pass the exam. (80-85% on the exams)

Thanks for you efforts in moving Project Management forward.

Again thanks for all your help,
